Pre-eminency of the Word of God/Jesus Christ as Trinity in salvation and new birth

You could have easily predicted it: in the rise of Calvinism comes a rise in hoped for division in Calvinism by the enemies of the gospel.

Every now and then someone starts quoting Kuyper in support of such things.

According to some who are interpreting Kuyper in favor of an arminian gospel, the Word of God is not the source of faith and new birth, but a Mysterious source and Mysterious power of God does the real work, part of that mystery enables a freedom in men to accept the gospel –or not– and then the Word of God is given a place in that overt pantheon of graces to bless what the Mystery did.

These kinds of supposed additions-to-Kypers-logic as snippets are a case in point:

As is taught in the parable of the sower, it is the soil, not seed (the Word) which determines the potency of the yeild.

Kuyper is quoted in such a manner as to appear in support of such a statement. That may or may not be the case. The Holy Spirit can regenerate someone reading their Bible just as easily as someone hearing the gospel preached from a pulpit or on the street or in their home. Angels are also given the gospel to preach:

Revelation 14:6,7  And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the everlasting glad tidings to announce to those settled on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people,  saying with a loud voice, Fear God and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come; and do homage to him who has made the heaven and the earth and the sea and fountains of waters.

A new creature in Jesus Christ is exclusively born again by hearing the Word of God. They can hear it through an angel, the Bible or by hearing it preached: but it is always the Same Word for the same reason.

God Says that no less than three times ( no less than, not just three times):

1 Peter 1:23-25  being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the living and abiding word of God.  Because all flesh is as grass, and all its glory as the flower of grass. The grass has withered and its flower has fallen;  but the word of the Lord abides for eternity. But this is the word which in the glad tidings is preached to you.

James 1:18  According to his own will begat he us by the word of truth, that we should be a certain first-fruits of *his* creatures.

Psalm 119:50  This is my comfort in mine affliction; for thy *word hath quickened me.

So the mere quote from Kuyper:

Hence the question, whether this regenerating act precedes, accompanies, or follows the hearing of the Word. And this question should be well understood, for it involves the solution of this seeming disagreement.

We answer: The Holy Spirit may perform this work in the sinner’s heart before, during, or after the preaching of the Word. The inward call may be associated with the outward call, or it may follow it. But that which precedes the inward call, viz., the opening of the deaf ear, so that it may be heard, is not dependent upon the preaching of the Word; and therefore may precede the preaching.

in no way proves that there is a separate act of the Spirit that always precedes regeneration. Kuyper didn’t say that: he said it was possible. But even in this he errs: he seeks to separate the Spirit from the Word and thus enable a timing problem that he by-passes as he speaks, but leaves behind as an obstacle to the new Christian.

God not only Says that He is One ( as Trinity ) in many ways, but specifically states the Word IS Spirit and IS God, not that the Word merely accompanies the Spirit or comes along later after the ‘Spirit Work’ is done:

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 4:24  God is a spirit; and they who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

John 6:63  It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life.

God directly Says it is the Spirit that quickens: He does not say  the Spirit ‘does a preceding act of ‘something’ to which the Word as a separate thing adds efficacy’. He Says the Spirit quickens AND is the Word AND is the Word spoken to you.

Seeking to divide the Spirit from the Word in regeneration may perhaps be done in an attempt to do away with priest-craft, or a class of persons saying “I have power because God only speaks his gospel through me.” and who seek to set themselves up as a gatekeeper to heaven. But in truth, in Christ, those who are sent are sent: they do not make up their call as do many. Nor are those in Christ imperious about that call as are those who fake a call and want to make money off the gospel, such as the Romanists, and all free will based ‘evangelists’. God actually speaks through us and controls what is Said as Spirit. Making a lie to fix something that isn’t broken is just more anti-Christ.

Those who hate Christ are always seeking a means to okay their own theft and rape of the flock of the Jesus Christ by defining a means that makes necessary an intermediary between Jesus Christ and you: they seek to make of themselves heroes while casting dispersion and confusion on God’s true servants.

And saying it is the soil that determines the fruit rather than the Spirit/Word/Son/Father is anti-Christ.

God has already placed the soil where it is and those souls to whom His Word will be sent where they are. That placement is not random, not accidental is  in fact part of the process of God controlling His own election. God even moves some persons from one soil to another as is very plain in Scripture.

Of the household of faith in Jesus Christ, God Says:

Isaiah 14:1,2  For Jehovah will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in rest in their own land; and the stranger shall be united to them, and they shall be joined to the house of Jacob.  And the peoples shall take them and bring them to their place; and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of Jehovah for servants and handmaids; and they shall take them captive whose captives they were, and they shall rule over their oppressors.

Psalm 1:1-3  Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, and standeth not in the way of sinners, and sitteth not in the seat of scorners;  But his delight is in Jehovah’s law, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he is as a tree planted by brooks of water, which giveth its fruit in its season, and whose leaf fadeth not; and all that he doeth prospereth.

In addition, the very parable of the sower falsely used to prove a separation between the Spirit and the Word itself proves the accusation wrong:

Mark 4:16,17  And these are they in like manner who are sown upon the rocky places, who when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy,  and they have no root in themselves, but are for a time: then, tribulation arising, or persecution on account of the word, immediately they are offended.

which is made plainer in:

John 15:4  Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine, thus neither can ye unless ye abide in me.

The arminian needs a Word:

1. that God does not control

2. Is not God Himself

3. Is separate from the Spirit

..and a process of life in Christ that involves:

1. no growth

2. no transplantation/ control by God

3. no additional Word of God as Spirit

4. no indwelling of God in us order to mysterize ( as in Mystery Babylon: that which makes obscure what is plain ) being born again order to make it seem possible he or she is actually speaking truth and can get some followers and thus a living or at least worldly honor.

In reality, God is in complete control of Himself as Word, where He goes, what He does in each, discriminating between the elect and the reprobate in accordance with the Book of life that is already written.

The place where the Word ‘lands’ is defined by God –and changed by God at His will in addition to some new creatures in Jesus Christ being uprooted and planted where they were not originally born again ( as being removed from among thorns and rocks and planted in good soil) and in addition to some elect being withheld from hearing the Word until the set time:

Isaiah 55:10-11  For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:  so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall do that which I please, and it shall accomplish that for which I send it.

Romans 11:16-28  Now if the first-fruit be holy, the lump also; and if the root be holy, the branches also.   Now if some of the branches have been broken out, and *thou*, being a wild olive tree, hast been grafted in amongst them, and hast become a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,  boast not against the branches; but if thou boast, it is not *thou* bearest the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches have been broken out in order that *I* might be grafted in.  Right: they have been broken out through unbelief, and *thou* standest through faith. Be not high-minded, but fear:   if God indeed has not spared the natural branches; lest it might be he spare not thee either.  Behold then the goodness and severity of God: upon them who have fallen, severity; upon thee goodness of God, if thou shalt abide in goodness, since otherwise *thou* also wilt be cut away.   And *they* too, if they abide not in unbelief, shall be grafted in; for God is able again to graft them in.  For if *thou* hast been cut out of the olive tree wild by nature, and, contrary to nature, hast been grafted into the good olive tree, how much rather shall they, who are according to nature be grafted into their own olive tree?  For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, that ye may not be wise in your own conceits, that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the nations be come in;  and so all Israel shall be saved. According as it is written, The deliverer shall come out of Zion; he shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.  And this is the covenant from me to them, when I shall have taken away their sins.  As regards the glad tidings, they are enemies on your account; but as regards election, beloved on account of the fathers.

Do not be deceived by liars who say you lack something only they understand and who seem to honor God in a worldy/fallen way. Your Word/Jesus Christ is not their speech/spirit.

1John 4:4-6  *Ye* are of God, children, and have overcome them, because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.  *They* are of the world; for this reason they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. *We* are of God; he that knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen
