Cult Buster: Once Saved Always Saved / Perseverance of the Saints

..is the simple truth of Scripture that once you are born again as new creature in Jesus Christ, you cannot be unborn in the Spirit; you cannot go back to what you once were. Praise the Name of Jesus Christ that the gifts and callings of God are not subject to repentance: God’s repentance. He will not go back from what He has sworn. It is not a question of those who are saved/born again as new creatures in Jesus Christ being determined enough to stick with God’s promises in self-effort.

Romans 8:38,39  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,   Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 11:29  For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

Let’s look at several attacks on the body of Christ that would have parts of His body appear ..and then disappear, and why they would attack in such an absurd manner.

1. An appeal to the witness of Scripture that God sanctifies all on the cross ( as purchasing to Himself the whole of creation as rightful heir and owner of it ) and His Creating Word effects all ..and then some are said to fall away ..is twisted to pretend all are born again by what they hear and blessed by that sanctification, and that God has no control over His Word, but that it is a blanket power that envelops whoever happens to be standing within earshot. An implicit universal quality is ascribed to salvation because of the universal quality of sanctification ( as God having purchased and made all things subject to Christ in the cross and resurrection and therein established Christ ruler and heir or all things ) and then the truth that some were never born again as non-metaphorical new creatures in Jesus Christ is used to portray that that universal quality is somehow dependent on man and if you don’t ‘use sanctification properly’ you ‘lose it’ as a supposed universal proof that you have free will and can lose your salvation.

2. An appeal that denies the new birth in Jesus Christ by omission, and but implies that ‘being saved’ is simply a matter of adopting an ideal model of behavior and constantly doing that ideal model and that God helps those who help themselves in that adherence. Anyone who discontinues that ideal model is said to be ‘fallen away’ and proof on the hoof that you can lose your salvation.

Since there was never any new birth in those of that whole cult, anyone no longer doing the rules of the cult are said to be fallen away and the proof salvation can be lost. Nothing divine ever happened; only the supernatural of the demonic they think to get away merely because of the invisible character of the supernatural presence of demons.

In that lie, you supposedly do the ceremonial part of that ideal model of behavior, ( which reduces baptism and communion to mere proofs of ‘God’s aid’ and the like ) and in exchange for doing the ceremony, you get mysterious will-neutral aid from God that never interferes with your supposed ‘free’ will, but that supposedly, mysteriously is a divine aid. There is no evidence of the divine nature of having received that aid from God except as can be proven by adherence to whatever ideal model of behavior the leaders of that movement can twist out of Scripture. Such an attack almost never mentions the new birth but only generalized evidence of ‘being a Christian’ of which you and not the Holy Spirit is the witness. It is an attempt to isolate you from God and invoke loneliness as automatic guilt.

The doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints is a cult buster.

no cults allowed!

no cults allowed!

Those ensnared in cults have to be kept ensnared by a dependence on the leadership in some fashion. Calvinism is true Christianity in that it sets us free from each other so that we can come together as those equally dependent on Christ and as free to fellowship without being ensnared by a functional worship of each other. You cannot control someone, you cannot threaten them and you cannot be threatened if you know that you are a new creature in Jesus Christ and they know they are a new creature in Jesus Christ. Indeed, nothing can be done to you who are in Christ by the leadership of the Church unless Christ Himself does it. When Christ does it, that has no dependence on ideal models of behavior –that is divine.

But if you are deceived you have free will and can lose your salvation by some act of will, or that the other guy can lose his salvation, the smallest look of disapproval from ‘the prophet’ or pastor or priest is sufficient to cow the adherent and to cause the adherent to cow others as peer pressure. The zealotry in cowing others is then seen in the eyes of the leader as another metric / measure of devotion to the ideal model of behavior. Thus the rampant fear in cults of doing something wrong: supposedly you don’t just anger the people around you, you can lose your soul if you do and you are trapped in their mere emotional norms and demonic constructs of the moment.

Universal sanctification and blessings on the just and the unjust:

Matthew 5:44-48  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;   That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.  For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?   And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?   Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Hebrews 2:8-10  Thou hast subjected all things under his feet. For in that he hath subjected all things to him he left nothing not subject to him. But now we see not as yet all things subject to him.  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour: that, through the grace of God he might taste death for all.  For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things, who had brought many children into glory, to perfect the author of their salvation, by his passion.

Hebrews 2:11,12  For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one. For which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying:   I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I praise thee.

Hebrews 10:28-30  He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:   Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace. For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Hebrews 6:4-6  For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, have tasted also the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, Have moreover tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come,  And are fallen away: to be renewed again to penance, crucifying again to themselves the Son of God and making him a mockery.

The blood of God is indeed Holy and has its effect on all whom God intends to have its effect, to include the wicked. The wicked get immortality in the lake of fire, not eternal life with God in the new heavens and the new earth and paradise when they die in this present age.

God will inherit all things and His peculiar treasure is Israel, the Church,  the Body of Christ. In Christ God inherits all things –even the wicked. They are His. He made them. He purchased them with His blood along with the elect. He is therefore their rightful king and will dispose of them in what way God desires.

Proverbs 16:4  The Lord hath made all things for himself: the wicked also for the evil day.

John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God.   The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.

Therefore He Says:

Luke 19:27  But as for those my enemies, who would not have me reign over them, bring them hither and kill them before me.

Seeking to twist universal sanctification ( both the reprobate and the elect are sanctified but not for the same end.. ) into universal salvation and then seeking to use the distinctions between the results of the sanctification of the wicked with the results of the sanctification of the elect as evidence of the elect ‘losing’ salvation/new birth is Antichrist.

Evidence of the discipline of the Church against real new creatures in Jesus Christ who were in error but who did not lose their salvation because they were not ‘acting like ideal Christians’.

1 Corinthians 5:1-5  It is absolutely heard that there is fornication among you and such fornication as the like is not among the heathens: that one should have his father’s wife.  And you are puffed up and have not rather mourned: that he might be taken away from among you that hath done this thing.  I indeed, absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, him that hath so done,  In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus:  To deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Later, we see the forgiveness of God and the restoration of the one in question:

2 Corinthians 2:6-8  To him who is such a one, this rebuke is sufficient, which is given by many.  So that on the contrary, you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.  Wherefore, I beseech you that you would confirm your charity towards him.

Distinction between those so delivered and wolves who speak false doctrines:

the one is said to be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. The other..

2 Timothy 3:5-9  Having an appearance indeed of godliness but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid.  For of these sort are they who creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires:  Ever learning, and never attaining to the knowledge of the truth.  Now as Jannes and Mambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth, men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith.  But they shall proceed no farther: for their folly shall be manifest to all men, as theirs also was.

2 Peter 2:9-14  The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly from temptation, but to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be tormented:  And especially them who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise government: audacious, self willed, they fear not to bring in sects, blaspheming.  Whereas angels, who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment.  But these men, as irrational beasts, naturally tending to the snare and to destruction, blaspheming those things which they know not, shall perish in their corruption:  Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you: Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls: having their heart exercised with covetousness: children of malediction.

Revelation plainly stating that our salvation is not dependent on us but on God’s promises, God’s watchful eye, God’s power and God’s witness of our true state –not our witness in moments of temptation by liars who seek control and not by acts of our will:

Hosea 13:14  I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

John 1:12,13  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Romans 11:29  For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

John 10:27-30  My sheep hear my voice. And I know them: and they follow me.  And I give them life everlasting: and they shall not perish for ever. And no man shall pluck them out of my hand.  That which my Father hath given me is greater than all: and no one can snatch them out of the hand of my Father. I and the Father are one.

Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be, which shall go forth from my mouth: it shall not return to me void, but it shall do whatsoever I please, and shall prosper in the things for which I sent it.

Job 23:13-15  But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.  For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.  Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

Romans 8:15-17  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

2 Thess 3:1-3  As to the rest, pray ye, brethren, concerning us, that the word of the Lord may run and may be glorified, as also with you,  and that we may be delivered from the unreasonable and evil men, for the faith is not of all; and stedfast is the Lord, who SHALL establish you, and SHALL guard you from the evil;

Jude 1:24,25  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,  To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Romans 9:14-26  What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.  For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?  Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?  What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:  And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,  Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?  As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.   And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

God’s witness that you cannot do the things you want ( the things the cult orders you to AND the true things of God that you wish to do on your own..) and yet that lack of doing those things on que is not evidence of being damned but of an inward struggle which God Himself fights on our behalf and which He and we have been ordained to win:

Galatians 5:17,18  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.  But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

A Christian/new creature in Jesus Christ in the midst of the struggle between the flesh and spirit lamenting the presence of evil in his flesh, but in no way being deceived he could lose his salvation or confounding his flesh with his spirit, soul and mind or total creature that is new creature in Jesus Christ:

Romans 7:14-25  For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.   For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.  Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:   But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.  O wretched man that I am! who shall DELIVER me from the body of this death?  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

1John 5:4-10  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.  And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.  If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen
